We welcome spring in the Southern Cone with our journal issue N°61. We are delighted with the variety of subjects that have been covered throughout the nine contributions, the interview and the two reviews; to our eyes, this is a good sign to state that the concerns raised by youth researchers in Latin America and Chile are being linked to the multiple aspects of youth lives, as well as to the questions that can be raised to observe the contemporary social dynamics and the youth factor present in all of them.

OTHERNESS DENIED, FACES MADE INVISIBLE. TRAJECTORIES OF SUFFERING IN YOUNG MIGRANTS IN CIUDAD JUÁREZ, MEXICO

The article analyzes the sociocultural production of suffering, seen from the experience of young migrant men and women in transit in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Based on a qualitative methodology, a series of interviews was conducted with young migrants, who are temporarily living in shelters, migrant houses, churches, and abandoned buildings in the center of the city awaiting the application process. humanitarian asylum. Taking into account in recent years, a contentious immigration policy and arbitrary detentions by agents of the Mexican state, the suspension of entry control measures such as Title 42 issued in 2020 by the United States government, As well as the growing presence in Mexico of organized crime and its violence against the migrant population.

ARMED CONFLICTS AND (DE)PEASANTIZATION IN THE LIFE COURSES OF TODAY’S YOUTHS IN THE SOUTH OF BOLIVAR, COLOMBIA

The article is the result of a collaborative research work carried out with young and adult people from Colombian peasant communities, as a contribution for the Commission for the Clarification of Truth, Coexistence and Non-Repetition (CEV). It proposes a perspective of the armed conflict through the analysis of the generational positions of today’s youths within the context of the socio-political codes of their life courses. It presents the effects of depeasantization from a war on youth, showing the generation legacies that they are carrying up to today. As a conclusion, the article states the challenges that these results suggest in order to make territorial peace to be feasible.

FROM MYTH TO FEAR: PERCEPTIONS OF YOUTH ON THE QUALITY OF DEMOCRACY IN THE BOLSONARO ADMINISTRATION

This article aims to understand the perceptions of young members of social and student groups about the quality of democracy in the Bolsonaro administration, focusing on the concept of «government performance» in terms of its relation with society and institutions, as well as its crisis management of Covid-19 pandemic. Data were collected in the heat of events and were analyzed through a univariate descriptive statistical analysis. It is observed that, to the eyes of young people, the figure of Bolsonaro as a «myth» turned out to be an autocratic figure of authority that causes fear and legal insecurity in the country, resulting in a democracy perceived as weakened and disrespected.

CHOOSING A HIGH SCHOOL: FAMILY AND YOUTH STRATEGIES IN EXCLUDED PLACES OF CÓRDOBA

We include this work within the study of school trajectories as an analysis perspective, focusing on the choice of the high school as a significant life event. The empirical material was rebuilt from a triangulation of inquiry techniques implemented in a public administration school in Córdoba. As main results, we found that the choice of the high school in excluded social areas is restricted by inequalities interwoven at economic, territorial, symbolic, and educational levels, fought by families attempting to mitigate them to achieve social, legal, and emotional recognition.

CO-CONSTRUCT BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVES WITH YOUNG STUDENTS. SUBJECTIVE EFFECTS OF THE BIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH APPROACH

In this article, we present the results of a research aimed to understand how subjects manage their double status of young people and high school students in a school of Córdoba, Argentina. From an interpretative-qualitative paradigm, we used the life story technique of the biographical approach and we worked with five young people who were finishing high school. We note that the experience of co-constructing their biographical stories generated identity, reflective and bonding effects in young participants, with specifically institutional resonances and in our role as researchers as well. We also delve into the ethical considerations involved and the importance of recognizing the imbrication between intervention and research within the psychosocial field.

SEXUAL AND AFFECTIVE CONSENT FROM THE VOICES OF FEMALE HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS IN CHILE

The article problematizes emotional and sexual consent from the voices of women Chilean students of higher education. To do this, qualitative research is conducted that analyzes their narratives on sexual violence and femicide, shared in the discussion groups. The main results show that female students feel violated in their private and public contexts, since in the patriarchal culture forms and styles of relationship are naturalized that make invisible and undermine the consent of young women, feeling, moreover, that the danger of suffering violence is narrowed to family, academic and sexual-affective spaces.

VIRTUALIZED NON-FORMAL EDUCATION. THE CASE OF THE SCOUT GROUPS IN CHILE

This research explores and describes the experience of scout groups in Chile in the development of their training activities through the adaptation of their activities to the telematic education modality. A questionnaire was applied to 124 leaders of scout groups, where three thematic axes were addressed: i) activation strategies; ii) desertion of members; and iii) effectiveness of the telematic modality. The results indicate that the scout groups had to adapt their strategies to keep their community active, having to articulate didactically the traditional contents with the new digital technologies available, reaching acceptable levels of effectiveness.

THE CONTRADICTORY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOUNG PEOPLE AND INSTITUTIONAL POLITICS: A VIEW FROM VOTERS OF GABRIEL BORIC

This article explores the political participation of young people in the election of Gabriel Boric and their relationship with institutional politics. A qualitative methodology is used, and it is concluded that young people value politics as a fundamental element of society, being political participation therefore not contradictory to other forms of participation. It is also concluded that political parties are regarded as fundamental entities for social organization, even though their perceived vertical hierarchy prevents young people from formally taking part in them.

IF YOU WANT, YOU CAN? FEAR OF FAILURE AND ITS RELATION TO THE EDUCATIONAL TRAJECTORIES OF YOUNG, UNDERPRIVILEGED UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN CHILE

To fail is to not meet achievement expectations at a specific moment. This article analyzes the fear of failure that arises in young people due to the real or potential risk of not fulfilling the promises of social rewards offered by the Chilean university system. Using a qualitative approach, the narratives of 18 students in highly feminized careers at medium and low selectivity universities in Chile were examined. The results showed that the students respond to fear with determination. Instead of giving up, they confront possible failure and develop strategies to overcome it, demonstrating agency and perseverance.

En el contexto de los diálogos con destacadas/es investigadoras/es sobre lo juvenil, la doctora en Trabajo Social Natalia Hernández Mary presenta sus reflexiones, aproximaciones metodológicas desde una perspectiva biográfica y nos comparte un desafío relevante para quienes investigan e intervienen con juventudes: poner a disposición los conocimientos alcanzados en las temáticas sobre juventudes de una manera articulada, buscando promover procesos de transformación social.
