Abstract

The need for a new abortion law in Spain provoked a debate during 2009 to defend free abortion as a women´s right and to overcome the legal model that justified abortion only in some cases. This debate coincided with some feminist public actions that took place in Latin America at the same time, claiming for abortion reforms. Women´s defenders in Spain and Latin America found the same opponents, mainly conservative political parties and churches secular groups.
Given the evolution of arguments and political empowerment of anti abortion groups, we require -to re-appropriate the terms of the debate- a revision of feminist approaches sometimes adapted to the real possibilities their demands can have at the national context. In that sense, in spite of the different contexts in Spain and Latin America, this article tries to give arguments that overcome the restrictions caused by abortion legislation, keeping as a political aim the right of women to the autonomy of their own body.
